[Fran�ois Kokelaere]

This CD is dedicated to Sekouba "Gbemgbedi" Bangoura, who passed away on August 29, 1999 and whom we miss daily. We feel his presence constantly and remember how extraordinary a man, how sincere a friend, how exceptional an artist and what kind of a pillar he was for the ensemble. Gbemgbedi was, to a great extent, behind Wofa !'s success today. We should not forget that this recording recreates the incomparable energy and sound of an actual performance by Wofa ! and shows how the grouphasachievedits unique identity and is on the road to maturity. The original group consisted of Bangoura, Kale and Fory.

The other musicians have come together around that nucleus. Foule stands out because of the freshness of his youth and his stage presence. Facinet astonishes us with his brilliant balafon playing, with its virtuosity and personality. Mory, who joined the group last, plays with a distinctive power and efficiency. Our dancers Marie, Mariame and Aicha brighten the stage with their extraordinary light.

We must make special mention 0f Fatouahou, whose influence is so essential that he is like Wofa !'s control tower. With his talent and experience acquired from years of touring, he takes Wofa ! to sublime heights. We must also say that he is one of the best djembe players in the world because of the incredible finesse and intelligence of this playing. His invaluable presence is what makes the group transcend the ordinary. This CD is indeed a major step on the long path that will bring us to a true maturity.
